Research
Funding
The Section of Research Funding strives to increase funding for
research and other programs in the Division through a combination of
activities.
First, the Section maintains a library of funding information and
stimulates
the submission of proposals by publicizing or otherwise highlighting
specific
opportunities. Secondly, through its central role in the selection of
candidates
for limited opportunities, the Section supports Divisional and faculty
interest in securing awards of high prestige and visibility. In
addition,
the Section plays a key role in competitive seed and bridge grants that
are
available
from a variety of internally managed funding sources.
Research Funding coordinates the institutional nomination
process for
opportunities like the PEW Scholars Program or the Packard Fellowships.
Since the University of Chicago is invited to submit only a limited
number
of nominations, a selection process is required and Research Funding
oversees
this process within the BSD and coordinates with University Foundation
Relations
and the Office of the Provost, as necessary. The Other award may be
inter-divisional and require an invitation by
the
Provost's office to nominate candidates. The Dean's Faculty Awards
Committee,
chaired by Nancy Schwartz, selects BSD's candidates who then represent
the BSD for inter-divisional competitions..
Funding
Opportunities:
- The Research Funding Office maintains a library of funding
information
in both print and electronic formats for fellowships, grants, and
contracts
from a range of sources, including federal and state agencies, private
foundations, corporations, and professional organizations. The print
library,
which includes annual reports, solicitations and forms, is being
increasingly
complemented and enhanced through electronic information sources. Using
a combination of resources, Section staff use materials to identify
potential
sources of funding for faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows through
custom searches and to respond to faculty inquiries for agency
guidelines
and applications.
Forms
and Guidelines:
- Many funding agencies, both federal and private, have established
websites to make solicitation information, policies and guidelines, and
forms readily accessible. We have collected some of the most common
agency
websites where you should be able to access forms and guidelines, if
the
agency posts them online.
Publications:
- The Research Funding publications highlight a selection of upcoming
funding opportunities and research-related issues for BSD faculty and
administrators.
Opportunities may be in the form of Signals, E-Signals, Award
Opportunities,
and Post-Doctoral Opportunities.
Request
a Search:
- This option allows the investigator or staff to request a search
with certain characteristics. The request will be forwarded to the
Section's
Project Assistant who will conduct the requested search.
